It is common to hear the voices of parents asking

“why do our children need LIFE SKILLS ?”

“ Have we not been brought up without that ?”

“I don’t think this is the right age to learn them”

First let us understand what is LIFE SKILLS  And  so on

According to WHO(world Health Organisation)

Life skills have been defined as “the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life” (WHO).

WHO has stressed a point that

LIFE SKILLS is an important part of the LIFE especially to young minds. In other words LIFESKILLS are those skills which enable one to face challenges of life , understand feelings and adopt to the condition of life and situations.

Objectives of Mental health in LIFESKILLS include

According to WHO(world Health Organisation)

Summer Camp 2016

  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Development of critical and creative thinking skills
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-awareness and empathy
  • Coping with stress and emotion

They can be elaborated still more like

Dealing with conflicts, authorities, stress, emotions, and cultural and religious disharmony

  • Making cross-culture relationships and friendships across societies and countries
  • Resisting pressure, clarification of values and customs, negotiations
  • Coping disappointment
  • Planning ahead, assertiveness, and empathy
  • Sociability, respect, self-esteem, tolerance, trust, sharing, compassion, and so forth

These aspects play a prominent role in deciding one’s path and life .

We find that behavior does not always follow the mind. This is when incidents of “I know but I can’t help it” occur. What we need is the ability to act responsibly.

For example

May be at times children know I am I am getting busted out  but can’t help myself as I am unable to control it.

There may be a situation children know , attracting to wrong person but they are unable to prevent themselves being vulnerable.

The situation is that children know their parents are their ultimate helpers but still listening to attractions that provoke them to go in a wrong path

They know the exams are not the final decision makers of life nor it is the final chance for living a life, but are unable to cope up with the situation and could not push them away from those suicidal or dangerous thoughts

Life skills enable us to translate knowledge, attitudes and values into actual abilities.

WHO has laid down 10 core life skills.

They include self-awareness, empathy ,critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, problem solving, effective communication, interpersonal relationships, coping with stress and handling emotions
